Episode 33: The Lost Email Sessions

Summary

You guys, we are so sorry. Yeah, we kind of knew the email was broken when it went all quiet for a few weeks, but we didn't know there was all this great, supportive feedback waiting for us there. This week, we make it right...and do tons of follow-up, obviously.

Real Follow Up

  • Jody passed martial arts test despite falling down unexpectedly.
  • Matt has Vegas stories. Mainly this: he hates Vegas.
    • Remember the getting older = more fearful thing? There’s a Vegas story about that.
      • We need more stories like this one (Facebook comment by Ten Gallon Hat Man)
      • A few pictures from that day: Driving into the desert The Desert! At Area 51 having a good time weirdness

Real Feedback

  • Mr. Pieces has become a dedicated listener. he went back in the catalog to check out the kids episode.

    • He volunteered as guest host if we wanted some functional components on parenting from a friend/contemporary/peer.
      • This is interesting. He would be the expert.
    • His email about the new top-level domains was intriguing. Any thoughts on Matt.guru?
    • Also: he instantly “liked” Matt's running posts on FB this week (again).
  • Matt mentioned “publication bias” and “file drawer effect” last episode as though everyone knew what that meant. Some peeps want us to explain what it is, as why it’s a problem.

    • Other publication biases: (it’s not just one thing, more of a category) bias towards preliminary studies (b/c they’re sexy, but they often don’t hold up to higher-level scrutiny), and bias against publishing exact replications (especially failed ones, which are the ones we need to see most).
    • A good article on Publication bias, and how it can affect specific research from Dr. Steve Novella at the New Egland Skeptical Society: Perception and Publication Bias

Fake Follow Up

  • If our Moms had a podcast…they’ve already named it.
  • Response from The Canonical Listener and Partner on my running gift list text file.
  • Jody has another list that’s begging for listener contributions: “items to make on a 3d printer (if I had one)”
    • the GTWS needs a maker-bot!
    • Our podcasting hero Dan at 5 by 5 has one now
  • Skepdick needs a show logo/icon. Ideas? Listeners?
    • Email us ideas at ALYT.show@gmail.com, or Skepdickshow@gmail.com
  • Shout-out to a new Tryer. Pseudonym: The Jamaican.

Topic: Lost Email Sessions

  • From Pseudonym To Be Named Later Listener:
    • Have you thought about selling memberships or branded products? I'd buy an overpriced coffee cup?
    • Ya'll have inspired me with the podcast. I'd like to try and start my own with my partner of many years….Once we have overcome the technical hurdles (i.e. get a new computer) and have a few ready to go, maybe we could help get your radio network off the ground.
  • From Mr. Pieces:
    • Also, I'm fully ready to buy something made by TCL - "I just have no idea what yet. Good job advertising. Maybe he should pay you elevens of dollars."
    • READ: TCL’s Canonical URL, pricelessprojectsllc.com
  • The Abbess: (Who gave me the mug)
